Typhoon Matmo Struck Coastal China Causing Widespread Evacuations

Typhoon Matmo made landfall on the southern shores of China on Sunday afternoon, following its sweeping across the provincial island of Hainan. The intense weather led to the evacuation of around 350,000 residents, delivering torrential rain and damaging winds, particularly between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were halted and air travel disrupted at the airport in Haikou.

Storm Details

The typhoon, the 21st cyclone of 2025, recorded wind speeds of 151km/h and poured more than 50mm of rainfall in six hours in Chongzou and Qinzhou. Urban areas of the region also received significant rain amounts.

Matmo triggered China's highest-level red alert, with disruptions in the city, where commercial activities, transportation systems and highways were shut. In the special administrative region, numerous air services were impacted and dozens called off.

Forecast and Movement

As the typhoon advances inward towards the provincial area in Vietnam, it is expected to diminish into a less intense system with 89km/h winds but will continue to bring heavy rainfall. Vietnam's northern regions could face significant rainfall on Monday, raising the risk of inundation and landslides. The weather pattern is expected to move towards Yunnan region in China, where further intense rain is likely.

At the same time, a hurricane named Priscilla developed off Mexico's Pacific coast on the weekend, first as a storm system. It led to a weather alert for the southwestern areas from a coastal point to another location on Monday.

In the morning of the next day, the hurricane was about 305 miles from a Mexican cape with continuous gusts of 105km/h. It intensified into a severe cyclone in the evening, when wind speeds reached at 121km/h.

Though not expected to make landfall, the storm is expected to generate dangerous waves and rip currents as it tracks northwestward along the coast towards a Mexican state. Substantial rain is predicted on the coming day, reaching 100-150mm in Michoacán and western Guerrero, with some areas at about 200mm. Other regions could receive moderate to heavy rain.

In other parts, a cyclone named Shakhti has formed as the initial post-season cyclonic storm of 2025 in the a body of water, causing an warning from the national weather agency for an Indian state. On Sunday, the cyclone was 130 miles southeast of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 103km/h.

The storm, which has tracked south-westward and weakened, is forecast to turn eastward into the the sea. Rough seas are expected to continue along the coastal stretch and intense rain is expected in shoreline areas including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
